Entry #212: “Dream”

September 14, 2021·30 min·2 clips
A pyramid three stories high, built entirely from human skulls, blocks a Manhattan street.
The frame is procedural. After ad material and a brief finale note, the excerpt settles on Sergeant Brand reading a ruined street with his military habits still in place. Some of the damage looks familiar. Windows are shattered, storefronts are torn open, and a truck lies overturned with its metal sides blown apart. That almost-normal quality is what makes it worse. Brand has seen IEDs and car bombs before, so this blast reads as ordinary compared with the city's wider break. Then the cargo changes the whole scene. Excelsior Deliveries was carrying metal foot lockers, each one holding several finger-sized steel-and-glass containers marked with a biohazard symbol. Poulter and Sandich react to the contamination risk, while Brand keeps pulling them back to their gear and the mission. Fear does not get them out of the job. The argument has a dry workplace absurdity to it, which makes the biological hot zone feel even colder. Poulter spots the timeline problem. A blast site like this should have been cleared, especially with a possible biological hazard sitting in the street. The wreckage is still there. That suggests the world broke faster than anyone could plan for. The dread gathers around that detail. The horror is not just the biohazard, but the plain fact that no one was left to remove it. Brand orders a search. Sandich pushes back, Brand answers with bleak practicality, and the mission goes on as if exposure is already part of the weather.

As heard by us

A bomb site, a biohazard load, and the sense that the change came very soon after the blast.

Entry #212, "Dream," puts Brand, Poulter, and Sandich in the aftermath of a truck bomb, where a delivery vehicle, biohazard-marked cargo, and a street of ruined storefronts make clear the damage is not ordinary. The reporting stays tight.
