The Ultimate 80s Crisp Face-Off

November 29, 2024·54 min·1 clip
Watsits vs Quavers - which was the 80s packed lunchbox special?
They open like a reunion. The hosts go straight into banter, swapping greetings, nicknames, and brotherly noise before the conversation settles on crisps and the memories attached to them. Pringles come first. Everyone throws in a favourite flavour, and the line-up moves fast through barbecue, Texas barbecue, paprika, sour cream, and original without much hanging about. That part is easy. The room treats Pringles like a warm-up round, because the real fight begins when they move to the old corn-crisp heavyweights. Monster Munch gets a look. Space Raiders gets pulled in beside it, and the comparison quickly turns into a question of taste, value, and what your pocket money could actually stretch to. Prices matter. The crew remember Space Raiders at 5p and Monster Munch at about 15p, which makes the argument feel as much like playground economics as snack preference. Quantity gets a shout. The cheaper packs keep their dignity because two or three bags of Space Raiders can still feel like a better win than one pricier bag of Monster Munch. But flavour bites back. Pickled onion gets called strong, maybe too strong for some, and the room keeps circling back to that sharp, full-on taste as if it still lives on the tongue. There is no mercy. They joke that Monster Munch can take a layer off the roof of your mouth, and that tiny bodily detail becomes part of the case against it. Then the other side arrives. Shop own-brand crisps get their turn, the hosts notice the difference straight away, and Walkers still comes out looking like the safer bet. It stays loose. The episode ends with hungry sign-offs, a donut in the background, and a final thank-you to the 1980s for the endless days that still sit in the memory.

As heard by us

A snack debate that becomes a messy, funny run through schoolyard memory.

Old School Movements turns a packet of crisps into a noisy, funny argument about memory and value. It starts with Pringles, moves through Monster Munch and Space Raiders, and keeps circling the same old schoolyard question: taste or price.
