Bonus: Carrier Wave One

November 26, 2024·57 min·5 clips
The creators of Observable Radio reveal the twisted inspiration behind their cannibalistic second episode, Cattle Drive.
This is not a transmission. Cameron Suey opens with the plain mechanics of the feed: one month after season one, one month before new original audio stories, and a need to keep something alive while the show rests. Carrier Wave knows it is standing at the edge of the fiction. The patron-exclusive format gives Cameron, Purpurina, and Phil room to talk behind the curtain without making Observable Radio feel less strange. Cattle Drive and Large Models become the main examples. The conversation follows how an idea firms up, and how an episode can make its own shape obvious only after the work is done. Large Models gets the closest look. Cameron describes an AI built so completely for other AI that human need ends up in the margins, still asking for help. The premise is simple and chilly. In hindsight, he hears that episode as the first one with a cleaner story arc: characters, motion, a beginning, a middle, and an end. Purpurina and Phil do not just nod along. Their surprise at his read gives the craft talk some friction, which keeps it from sounding too pleased with itself. A working method comes into view. The team can hear each installment teaching them what to repeat, what to fix, and when to try the harder version next. Cameron says the old process had him editing alone, then sending nearly finished pieces out for broad reaction. That changed. Now scenes can be heard while they are still being shaped, so notes can land where rhythm, tone, and structure are still movable. The bonus keeps its easy warmth. Day jobs, monthly scheduling, listener funding, and the simple pleasure of making the show come up near the end without breaking the frame. Phil gets the final stay tuned. It feels less like a formal commentary track than a small record of a fiction figuring out what it is good at.
