Science of the Stride: Energy Balance & Performance with Hannah Caldwell

·53 min·1 clip
We saw about an 8% impairment in performance in that time trial test, and even with three days of refueling, that impairment was the exact same.
Postdoctoral researcher Hannah Caldwell discusses her randomized crossover study on 14 days of severe low energy availability (50% caloric restriction) in endurance-trained females. Key findings include an 8% performance decline that persisted even after 3 days of refeeding, unchanged muscle glycogen despite restriction, increased fat oxidation that may have hurt high-intensity performance, and elevated cortisol and inflammatory markers.
