Fuel, Focus, and Finish Lines: Katie Asmuth's Lessons in Racing, Recovery, and Simplifying Nutrition

·57 min·2 clips
Kyla Chanel opens the show as a performance nutritionist specializing in sex differences in sport, with a research first approach aimed at cutting through the BS in media and sharing real nutrition and racing experiences. Katie joins with a story from a long race where her gut turned on her after an explosive episode. Kyla explains that emodium slows gastric motility, which means calories and carbs may not be absorbed the same way going forward. Katie says she took two doses, which is what you're supposed to do after the first explosive episode, but it did not help the race. She thinks the trigger may have been caffeine, though she cannot say for sure. Looking back, she does not think sodium was the real issue. The bigger problem was that once her stomach went off track, her nutrition stopped working. She notes that sometimes race day GI episodes can pass if you stay calm and keep moving. Instead, she reached for a med bag and tried to solve everything at once, including Zofran, emodium, Pepto, and Tylenol. She says a beginner's mindset would have helped more than a reflex to medicate. Even after the setback, she kept moving and held second place until around mile 76 or 77, though she says she was on fumes. The episode closes with a short social media discussion, including Katie saying most of her followers are trail running moms, and that connecting with people online has been only positive.
