Episode 203: A STORM OF SWORDS, JON VII: ”Fighting Fire with Fire”

·57 min·5 clips
Jon freezes when he sees Ygritte's red hair in the battle, revealing his unresolved love amid the violence.
The smoke matters. A patron question about Castle Black's future sends Emmett and Manu into the problem of leadership: someone has to be in charge before anyone can bargain. Styr is not that person. He wants the Watch broken and Mance holding the stronger hand, so Jon's imagined speech about joining together against the Long Night would probably die in the air. Grim, and a little funny in the bleak way this chapter is funny. Jon gets pressure from every direction: the Watch, the wildlings, Stannis, Westeros, the Others, and the feelings he cannot put down. Molestown is the message. Styr does not need surprise, because the fire already tells Castle Black that he thinks their time is over. Manu and Emmett take that as ambition, tied to Styr's old wish to be king beyond the Wall. The attack feels personal as well as military. Then the conversation goes big. Fire opens the door to cultural change, with the First Men, Andals, Aegon, Melisandre, and Daenerys all in the mix. Jon sits at that crossing. The hosts treat R plus L equals J as more than family-tree business: Jon becomes the place where ice and fire meet. Big stuff, sure. But they keep dragging it back to smoke, walls, failed talks, and one young man stuck with an impossible job. By the end, they are back in shop-talk mode, previewing Bran, joking about the same Pirates of the Caribbean bit, and setting up Lo the Lynx. Recap becomes argument, argument becomes lore, and then it strolls out through easy host banter.
