NC #1066 PowerPhotos on ScreenCastsONLINE, Demon Bots, USB Cable Tester and Multimeter, Security Bits

October 13, 2025·1 hr 30 min·5 clips
The CPU and load graphs fell off a cliff. CPU went from 100% down to 25% right at the timestamp.
Allison Sheridan discusses her new ScreenCastsOnline tutorial on PowerPhotos, a Mac app that extends Apple Photos with library merging, splitting, duplicate management, and metadata editing capabilities. The episode then shifts to her server crisis: her podfeet.com server was continuously hammered with 100% CPU usage. With developer Teg Bushman's help, she diagnoses bot attacks on xmlrpc.php (needed for MarsEdit blogging) and wp-login.php. Using CloudFlare's rate limiting security rules, they block these attacks, with a dramatic CPU graph dropping from 100% to 25% at the moment the rule activates. The episode concludes with Allison and her engineer husband Steve testing USB cables with the TreeDix cable tester to diagnose her Kindle Voyage's charge-only cable issue.

As heard by us

A repair diary that turns USB tools into genuinely useful listening.

NoCillaCast 1066 works best as a field report on a hardware repair, and that is exactly where it lands: a Kindle screen teardown, a pair of USB diagnostic tools, and the small frustrations that make technical listening feel grounded.
