Natalie Bassingthwaighte: “The Night That Ended My Marriage”

March 29, 2026·1 hr 7 min·4 clips
Natalie Bassingthwaighte describes the single night on stage that ended her marriage without a word spoken.
Touch was the first thing to go. Natalie Bassingthwaite starts with the aftermath of a night that changed her marriage, when her body could no longer handle being held by her husband. She did not have a tidy explanation, which is partly why the conversation hurts. She says she had not simply stopped loving Cam. The love was still there, and so was the recoil. Kate gives that contradiction some space, placing Natalie first as someone people knew from music, television, theatre and Neighbours, then moving into the private break underneath it. The word wife hit hard. Natalie says that when Cam asked where his wife had gone, something in her locked up. The old word did not seem to fit the person sitting there anymore. She did not want to feel owned. Even Cam's body, beautiful and big in her memory, started to feel frightening in a way neither of them could make sense of. When he asked if she was a lesbian, Natalie says the words would not come. The silence was not a clean answer. It was shock, confusion, and a body that had worked something out before the mind could catch up. Kate does not turn Cam into the problem, either. The episode stays with the affection in Natalie's writing about him, and with the daily work of finding a different kind of love after the marriage has changed shape. It is tender, strange and still unsettled.

As heard by us

Natalie Bassingthwaighte turns a familiar public career story into a candid account of love, identity and a marriage ending.

No Filter uses Natalie Bassingthwaighte's public career as the way into a more private reckoning: the night that altered her marriage, the physical withdrawal that followed, and the slower work of understanding love, identity and family after it.
