Unstoppable Food Fridays #5 – Bend your Zone, Not Your Gender.

January 2, 2026·40 min·4 clips
Dustin explains how a wallopini, an underground greenhouse, can let him grow mangoes in Florida by tapping into constant earth temperature.
Eight o'clock opens the garden sermon. After two cold Florida days, the host treats the weather as a warning and a chance to get the backyard ready. Zone nine sounds generous until the frost shows up. He explains that Florida heat and humidity still leave enough cold to knock back tender fruit plants. Bananas and mangoes can grow, he says, but they may die back before they ever fruit. So he moves toward plants that can take a hit. The system he likes is not careful annual timing or full-time farming discipline. It is survival by perennials, returning food plants, and anything that does not need constant babysitting. He says the plain part out loud: he is trying to garden while keeping up with the news and the world around him. Easy plants are the point. Pots give young plants a way through winter. They can come inside when needed, then move into deeper holes with mulch once their roots are stronger. Sweet potatoes get the starring role. Even when the leaves vanish, even when ducks chew them down, the food underground waits and comes back. Thermal mass gets folded in too, with a bucket of sun-warmed water used to soften the cold around tender plants. Then the rabbits enter the plan. Boys stay in cages, girls stay in a colony, and livestock becomes part of the same backyard logic. The ending gets more personal and jumpy, moving through back pain, rabbit meat memories, upcoming shows, support requests, and a bleak survival aside before the sign-off.
