4 Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia

November 26, 2024·15 min·1 clip
Amelia Bedelia runs to pick up second base because she thinks a player is trying to steal it.
The host introduces the episode by highlighting the humor in language and Amelia Bedelia's character. The story begins with Amelia Bedelia walking past a baseball field where the Grizzlies team is upset because Donnie has measles and they need a replacement. Amelia Bedelia volunteers despite not knowing baseball. Tom explains the basics: hit the ball and run bases while the other team tries to tag you out. Amelia Bedelia practices batting but gets hurt stepping in to meet the ball. She goes home, alters an old uniform, and bakes cookies. At the game, she misunderstands instructions: she uses a literal tag to tag Jack out, throws the ball to first base then carries Dick when told to 'put him out', and picks up second base to save it from being stolen. As catcher, she pushes the batter aside to catch the ball herself, angering the Tornadoes. The Grizzlies are losing 8-5 in the last inning with bases loaded and Amelia Bedelia at bat. After missing two swings, she hits the ball hard and runs, but instead of running to bases, she physically scoops up first, second, third base, and home plate, thinking stealing is allowed. This scores enough runs to win the game 9-8. The boys cheer for her, and she offers to be scorekeeper, promising to keep their score safe in a locked box. When asked to return the bases and home plate, she brings home plate back piled with cookies, which the boys enjoy. Tom concludes she may never learn baseball but can cook well.
