Pete Roberts: He Lost Everything, Built a 100% American Brand | MTNPOD #145

·1 hr 3 min·4 clips
He lost 60% of his business overnight and rebuilt around American manufacturing.
He opens by talking about the kind of business pressure that shows whether a founder truly believes in the work. He says the ups and downs never felt fully threatening because the purpose stayed clear, and that the purpose would matter whether they worked there or not. He also argues that you can tell when someone has an idea that might make money but does not have a real why behind it. That instinct, in his view, comes from the emotional calluses of business. The episode then shifts into the rougher stretch Origin went through. He says the company lost six million dollars last year. He describes that as a very hard thing to absorb, especially after years of not losing money. The pressure was not just financial but also personal, because the outside world can see revenue and assume everything is fine. He says the company had to make a major course correction over about eight months, and that they pulled themselves out of it. Even so, he sounds grateful for the strain because it tested what they were made of. He compares their world to the mats in jujitsu, where you learn who you are by being tested in a specific environment. He describes Origin as a place where they know the customer, know themselves, and know what they are not. That line of thought carries into his larger belief in bringing manufacturing back to America. The conversation does not stay in business for long. He moves into fatherhood and the way he approached raising his kids. He says he and his wife treated childhood as a time to build mindset first. His daughters grew up outside, on bikes, in the woods, and with a lot less screen time than most kids their age. He says there was no TV and no phones until they were 14. The point, from his perspective, was to give them structure before the real world got its hands on them. He connects that parenting choice back to the same theme running through the business talk. Mindset determines methods. The whole episode circles around that idea without ever forcing it.
