422: The Wreck of the Circus Ship Royal Tar w/ Jane Parks Gardner
·49 min·2 clips
An elephant scooting down a hill on his rear end to reach the ship that would doom him.
As heard by us
Mogul's downhill shuffle gives the Royal Tar's forgotten voyage its most memorable image.
The Royal Tar's doomed voyage becomes less a shipwreck setup than a strange civic scene: after a final performance in St. John, a city watches an elephant, two lionesses, a tiger, camels, wild birds, and snakes move toward the waiting vessel.
Why you'd press play
A forgotten shipwreck story with circus animals and a vivid walk down through hilly St. John.
