Sarah emerges panicked and alone, screaming for help as her partner Mirko is still trapped deep below.
The episode begins with hosts Paulina Krasa and Laura Wohlers introducing a diving accident case. They describe Sarah and Mirko, an Austrian couple with two young children, who travel to Bavaria for their first mountain lake dive. Sarah is an experienced diver, while Mirko recently obtained his Advanced Open Water certification. The dive is organized by a Munich dive school, with guide Tobias assigned to them. During the dive in the Weichensee, problems arise quickly: the water is cold and dark, and Mirko uses air rapidly. At 36 meters depth, Sarah experiences symptoms of nitrogen narcosis including dizziness and nausea. Mirko signals to ascend, but their ascent becomes too fast until Tobias stops them at 10 meters. The trio then begins sinking uncontrollably back to the bottom. Sarah, fearing for her life, separates and makes a solo emergency ascent. She surfaces alone and is rescued. Mirko does not surface and is later found dead on the lake floor. The police investigation follows, revealing multiple equipment issues: Mirko was given a wetsuit too thin for cold water, weights meant for saltwater diving, and a smaller air tank than requested. The dive school had failed to provide appropriate gear despite Sarah's prior email specifying needs. The case goes to trial with Tobias charged with negligent homicide. Expert testimony highlights his failures to check equipment and his decision to abandon Mirko underwater when he still had options to assist. The legal debate centers on whether Mirko's death resulted from his own assumed risks or Tobias's breach of duty as a guide. The court ultimately convicts Tobias, finding he had superior knowledge and a protective duty. He receives a fine of 90 day-fines totaling 3,150 euros. The episode concludes by noting Sarah's return to diving years later, including free diving, as a way to honor Mirko.
