AI Is Changing Me - and the Case for Good Enough

A listener's portfolio beat Vanguard LifeStrategy Growth by 2.5 percentage points annualized.
Episode 552 begins with AI, but the episode is really about judgment. David Stein talks through recent good and bad AI experiences, then uses a member's portfolio dilemma to test what good enough means in practice. The member is weighing a Vanguard lifestyle fund against a more complicated, more diversified portfolio. David does not turn it into a spreadsheet contest. Performance matters, but so do the inputs, the maintenance, and the flexibility someone can actually keep. From there, the episode moves into a bigger worry: leisure has become easier and more solitary. Bowling leagues, civic clubs, church groups, union meetings, and neighborhood gatherings took effort, but they also built shared attention. Streaming alone on an iPad, scrolling TikTok while watching television, and picking the easiest entertainment can strip that away. Podcasting is part of the same problem. David says audio can still create a connection, but information by itself is less special when AI can answer questions and keep a conversation going. Story has to carry more weight. So does community. A live portfolio cohort would have members build a rebalanced portfolio over three weeks while learning with other people. The ending stays deliberately unpolished. AI helps, then forgets, overweights what just happened, lacks some abilities, and needs testing. Rules of thumb still matter. So does slack. A life tuned too tightly can get brittle fast.

As heard by us

AI, portfolio tradeoffs, and the case for good enough.

David Stein treats AI as part of the episode's argument, not just a side topic. He brings in recent positive and negative experiences, then uses them to frame a plain case for good enough.
