Nicole Sanchez: A Sister's Fight for Justice

·27 min
Moms and Mysteries hosts Mandi and Melissa present Nicole Sanchez's story, recorded while Mandi recovers from major hip surgery. Nicole, born April 22, 1982 in Saginaw, Michigan, was a jokester called 'Coco' with contagious laugh and multiple talents: singing (winning local talent shows), drawing, and love of animals. She was taking night classes to complete her high school diploma and dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant, already having picked out future daughter's name: Charlotte (Charlie). Raised gently by her homicide detective father and loving family with strong church/community ties, Nicole met 23-year-old Lionel Villarreal when she was 17. Her sister immediately sensed danger ('wrong side of tracks' energy). Though Lionel claimed to be 20, the four-month relationship exhibited classic grooming patterns: isolation from friends, control over her clothing and plans, emotional manipulation disguised as love. A week before her death, Nicole called her sister crying about Lionel's lies and cheating; her sister recognized the control dynamics and urged her to end it. Night of September 25-26, 1999: Nicole tells her sister (while doing her makeup for a dance) she's done with Lionel. Later she joins him at his family home for pay-per-view boxing. When her food order is forgotten, she and Lionel leave together. In the early morning hours, a single gunshot shatters the silence. Nicole is found on the living room floor, shot at point-blank range between her legs in a catastrophic wound. Prosecutors later characterize this as 'the ultimate expression of domination' and 'ultimate act of aggression against a woman.' Medical examiners cannot determine if sexual assault occurred. Lionel is arrested; his story changes repeatedly, initially claiming Nicole shot herself (implausible given her father's firearms training). Nicole's sister learns through a horrifying phone call while at boyfriend's house; the caller asks for Emilio first, not her. Family races to St. Mary's Hospital where police cars line the driveway. Nicole's father—a man who delivered death notifications as part of his job—must deliver one to his own child. Nicole's sister screams hard enough to pass out, waking to family gathered around her, not comprehending until explicitly told: your sister is gone.
