Mockery Minis 2: In Omnia Paratus

December 9, 2024·48 min·4 clips
Nancy's father warns her about wolves disguised as sheep, but she's too hungover to heed his cryptic advice.
Nancy is almost eighteen, and her father has picked breakfast for a lecture about wolves, rogues, and rooms that should be inspected before they inspect you. Nancy is too hungover for Latin-flavoured paternal doom. The warning lands somewhere near the butter knife, though it turns out to have some use. At the gathering, the room is trying hard to look modern. Nancy sees the rot straight away. Bessie attempts damage control, but Nancy looks at the dance floor and decides the whole thing is decay in zebra print. Her manners do not last. She calls the place a gloomy old pile, then makes it worse by comparing the party to a mausoleum. Martha Mockery hears plenty. Her reply is cold enough to tell Nancy she has just insulted the wrong house in front of the right woman. Nancy makes a poor show of innocence and privately enjoys the wreckage. The insult works because Martha agrees, even if she hates the method. Alfred's renovations have made her feel like a ghost in her own home. Since the war, he has taken control piece by piece and left her out of the decisions. Nancy's rudeness gives Martha something to carry to the veranda, where Alfred is smoking above the tennis courts. The house gets its revenge indirectly: a breakfast warning curdles into a fight over taste, power, and who gets to haunt the place while still breathing.
