Mockery Minis 1: Misadventure At Mockery Lake

October 15, 2024·51 min·4 clips

Freddie finds a locked door he's never seen before, with a thin strip of light hinting at secrets inside.

Freddie Armstrong goes looking for something horrible. Mockery Manor, the park, and the woods have so many ghost stories hanging around them that ordinary curiosity has started to feel like homework. Freddie has not seen anything. That is a problem at school, where living near terror is supposed to come with proof, preferably something good enough to shut people up. Instead, the place keeps quiet. His haunted theme park address makes him seem dangerous for a minute, then boring when no ghost turns up. The narration has fun with the humiliation without softening it. Playground status and gothic legend both come off petty, mean, and eager to make a child squirm. Then the lake takes over. Sherry and Duncan are stuck in a boat, and what starts as teasing about a crocodile gets sharp fast. Sherry calls him a fibber, and Duncan's charm drops so quickly the air changes. Suddenly she is not sitting with someone having a laugh. She is in a small boat with someone angry, and the water around them starts to feel less scenic. Sherry tries to patch things up with talk of crocodiles, turtles, and urban myths, but Duncan only gets colder. When she asks to go back to the party, his sarcastic manners and frantic grab for the oar make the danger feel real. The splash is almost too neat. The oar slips away, and Duncan's blame lands harder because of it. Then Tabletop Tunes barges in, bright and chaotic, while the lake scene lingers behind it.
