Memory Royalties: The Missing Link in Wealth Management with Todd Rustman

·22 min·2 clips
Todd Rustman reveals why 'Memory Royalties' is the missing link in wealth management that most advisors ignore.
The episode begins with host Adam Torres introducing Todd Rustman, author of 'Memory Royalties' and partner at Clarity Capital Partners. Rustman shares his mission to be in a constant learning environment and give back. He recounts his early years working for his father's school bus business in Missouri from age 10, where a manager called a broom an 'idiot stick', teaching him the value of education and hard work. Rustman developed an interest in finance in high school by reading about Warren Buffett and value investing. He attended Pepperdine University on a scholarship, then Thunderbird for an MBA in global management, where he became fluent in Japanese. Rustman moved to Tokyo in the early 1990s to understand Japan's economic rise, using pay phones and phone cards in a pre-cell phone era. He returned to the U.S. and worked for Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan and PIMCO before transitioning to private client wealth management. Rustman co-founded Clarity Capital Partners, a holistic wealth management firm with under a billion in assets under management, recently partnered with Summit Registered Investment Advisor Group. He explains that 'memory royalties' is a term inspired by the book 'Die With Zero', referring to investing in memories and experiences that enrich life without becoming burdens. Rustman wrote the book to organize his thoughts and leave a legacy for his children, though they haven't read it yet. He emphasizes that the biggest takeaway is the superpower of continuous learning, especially as AI and technology advance. The discussion touches on how longer lifespans require rethinking retirement, with Rustman advocating for semi-retirement and fulfilling activities. He concludes by sharing resources like his LinkedIn, Clarity Capital's website, and the book on Amazon, and stresses the need to stay ahead of AI to serve clients effectively.
