Bill moves through the hiring process step by step, making the top five, then the top three, before being offered the job. The offer brings an immediate decision, because leaving Omaha early would mean losing pension money he would never see again. Papillion had no pension and only a 401K, so the move changed more than his title. He was also going from battalion chief in Omaha to fire chief in Papillion while taking a pay cut. Debbie's reaction matters just as much as the job itself. She did not want the limelight that came with being the fire chief's wife in a small community. Bill asks for until Monday to answer, then spends late Sunday night convincing her that the move is the right one. Their agreement is simple enough for the life they were about to enter. She would go to as few official events as possible. Over the next 15 years, that meant only three appearances: his swearing in, one mayor's Christmas party, and an award at Midlands Hospital. The detail lands because it shows how visible public service can sit beside a private household that wants very little attention. When the conversation closes, the tone stays thankful and plain. The host and Bill both return to the idea that they go where God sends them and try to do what he tells them to do.
