A Reaching People - My City, My Church (Week 1)

·45 min·5 clips
MidCities Church opens a new My City, My Church series in Luke 5. The sermon welcomes the congregation across campuses, notes a season where more than 1,000 people worship beyond the original English 191 sanctuary, and treats the church's annual above-and-beyond giving as a shared family commitment. It starts with gratitude. From there, the message says the series is for the MidCities family, not a generic guest sermon, because the goal is to name a specific purpose and a clear vision for the year ahead. Levi enters the frame next. The preacher identifies Levi with Matthew, places him in Capernaum, and connects his tax-collector work to ordinary life, local reputation, and the pull of a secure routine. The story keeps moving. Jesus is presented as someone Levi likely already knew about through healing and public teaching, which makes the call to leave everything sound sudden but not random. The teaching leans into that moment. Instead of treating discipleship as a polished idea, it imagines a man at work in a white truck, on the phone, with a burrito nearby, getting called out of the oil patch and into a different life. The humor is deliberate. It keeps the room open while the sermon presses toward a serious claim: some people live by substitutes, but Jesus calls them to abandon those substitutes and come after him. Capernaum matters here. The preacher uses the village's size, its fishing economy, and its role in Jesus' ministry to show why Levi's response carries weight. The sermon stays concrete. Work, family, food, and schedules all become a way to talk about faith that interrupts comfort and rewrites priorities. Then the invitation widens. The closing prayer names friends, family, Monette and her family, and neighbors in Odessa, Midland, Andrews, McCamey, Big Spring, and the surrounding Permian Basin, asking for a harvest of souls and a real encounter with Jesus. It ends with hope. The whole message keeps returning to one question: who will come to the table, and what will happen when they do?
