Michigan Music History Podcast--Malcolm Cottle: Musician Media Mogul: From Madonna To Freemont Pike

·1 hr 12 min·4 clips
The band built the Detroit Girl video around consent, role reversal, and making fun of themselves.
The episode is recorded live inside the Rock Legends Hall of Fame in Bay City, Michigan. Scott Baker introduces Malcolm Cottle as a curator at the Sloan Museum in Flint, a drummer with Fremont Pike, and a videographer who shot the Madonna documentary that we did here at the historical or for the historical museum of Bay County. The conversation starts at the beginning. Cottle says he was born in Stratford, Ontario, and later came to Michigan for undergrad. The hosts linger for a moment on Stratford and its theater reputation, and also mention that music has come out of there over the years. The talk turns to music at home. Cottle says his father has been a radio DJ for nearly forty years, so music was always around. That gives the interview a family-rooted start. From there the discussion drifts into Fremont Pike. Cottle describes the band as fun and a little silly, while also saying they still take the music seriously. He explains that he does a lot of the material himself and brings it to the others, which is how the relationship with the band started. They have also done covers and other playful pieces. The group has three EPs out already, and they are on Spotify and everywhere else through DistroKid. They have not done CDs or vinyl yet, though a vinyl press is something they may consider for the first album, LP1. The conversation also points to how active the band has been. They played Excellency Music Fest in Bay City this year and last year. They also played Local Fest in Flint and Alley Fest in Flint. Detroit comes up too, with mentions of PJ's Lager House and the Sanctuary. Cottle says the band has only been truly in public view for about a year. The segment closes with the usual MMHP thanks and sign-off.
