The Practice of Bible Study, Part 2

·58 min·4 clips
Observation requires a will to observe, a passion for precision, and a pledge to persistence.
The episode begins with Psalm 119:129-136. The speaker reads the stanza aloud and treats it as a picture of the heart that really knows the Word of God for what it is. He says the psalmist sees God's Word as more precious than the choicest gold and sweeter than the sweetest honey. From there he makes the practical point that nothing changes a life more than going deeper into the Word of God. He then turns from admiration to method. The emphasis is not speed. It is careful reading. He tells the listener to read progressively. Start generally. Then read again with more slowness and more attention to smaller details. He frames that movement as general to specific. He also says to read patiently, because what is worth most takes the most effort. He then distinguishes two approaches that belong together. One is breadth. That means a steady habit of reading through large sections of Scripture so the big picture stays in view. He recommends reading several chapters at a time and moving through the Bible sequentially or by a reading plan. The other approach is depth. That means taking a specific text and studying it closely. He describes that study as orientation, observation, interpretation, and application. He says a paragraph may take two weeks if the passage requires that kind of care. The point is not to rush past the text. The point is to stay with it until its meaning is clear. He also warns against treating breadth and depth as rivals. General Bible reading and focused study should happen side by side. One gives you the whole frame. The other gives you precision. The episode keeps returning to the idea that the Scriptures reward effort. If you want the richest gain, you must read with patience. If you want the strongest grasp, you must come back to the same passage again and again. The closing prayer pulls the whole sermon back into Psalm 119 language. It asks that God's testimonies would be wonderful to the listener, that the soul would love and observe them, that God's face would shine upon His servant, and that His Word would be known and honored more deeply. It ends by asking that God would be glorified and that the prayer be offered in the name of Jesus Christ.

As heard by us

A steady case for slow, serious Bible study.

This episode treats Psalm 119 as a plain argument: the Word of God is not decoration, but something that can change a life. It stays practical, moving from the psalmist's hunger for the Word to a case for reading broadly, reading progressively, and reading patiently.
