MedCrimes: a Medical True Crime Podcast · Kate Macy and Devon Rebecca

Janie Lynn Ridd, part 1

·58 min·10 clips
Two best friends tackle medical crimes with 20 years of friendship and zero chill.
MedCrimes opens in its loose, friendly cadence, with Devin and Kate trading jokes before the case takes over. They spend time on vacation plans, family chaos, and Patreon news. Then the story shifts to Rachel, a young paramedic whose life changes after a herniated disc. The injury brings a lifting restriction, and because her work with the ambulance service requires heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity, she eventually has to leave that job. The loss hits hard, since it cuts off both income and the work she cared about. Rachel also had things that brought her joy, like dancing, going out, and meeting people, but those outlets fade as she becomes more isolated in the house. At the same time, she learns she is pregnant. The baby’s father is not interested in being part of her life or the baby’s life, so Rachel is left to carry that pregnancy on her own. She is already in pain and already out of work, which leaves her vulnerable to whatever comes next. Janie tells her she can cover the expenses and help her get around while she gets back on her feet. What starts as support slowly takes on a caregiver shape, and Rachel depends on Janie more and more. The hosts keep translating the medical side into plain speech, while reacting in real time, which gives the telling a lived-in, human feel. The story keeps building on the quiet ways a person can be isolated before anything openly violent happens. Money trouble matters here. So does lost mobility. So does the shrinking of a social world down to one relationship. The episode keeps its focus on that pressure and closes by pointing toward part two, where the case moves further into the consequences of that dependence.

As heard by us

A conversational true crime case where injury, pregnancy, and dependence tighten the pressure.

Janie Lynn Ridd, part 1 stays easy to follow, tracing a young paramedic whose herniated disc and pregnancy leave her more dependent on Janie and more shut in at home.
