How confident are crypto consumers?

March 16, 2026·6 min
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School have developed the Consumer Cryptocurrency Confidence Index, a monthly survey modeled after the University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index. The survey, now in its third year, aims to measure public sentiment toward cryptocurrency and potentially predict price movements. Marketing professor Dave Rebstein, one of the creators, hopes the index can guide investment decisions by forecasting crypto market trends. The research reveals a cyclical relationship between consumer confidence and cryptocurrency prices, where rising prices boost confidence, which in turn drives prices higher. The index peaked in April of the previous year before declining, followed by a subsequent drop in crypto prices. Geographic data from the survey challenges common assumptions about crypto adoption, showing that the Midwest and South demonstrate more optimism and investment in cryptocurrency than coastal regions. Rebstein attributes this pattern to a desire for decentralized financial systems free from major institutional control. Age demographics follow more predictable patterns, with the 25-35 age group showing high interest but limited financial capacity, while the 35-54 age group represents the largest investment segment due to greater disposable income. Older demographics remain more conservative, viewing crypto as gambling money rather than serious investment. The survey data indicates that most people treat cryptocurrency as an investment vehicle similar to stocks rather than using it as actual currency for transactions. While some businesses accept crypto payments, including Wharton's own cryptocurrency course offering, widespread adoption for purchases remains limited. The research suggests that consumer sentiment may serve as a leading indicator for crypto market movements, with confidence changes preceding price fluctuations. This approach represents an attempt to apply traditional economic sentiment analysis to the volatile cryptocurrency market.
