Magnificent Montague - Montague's Father

April 11, 2026·29 min·2 clips
Edwin accuses his father of tripping him during Hamlet and holding a shield in front of his face in Macbeth.
Montague has a secret. The big Shakespearean name is now Uncle Goodheart on an afternoon radio program, and the theater club cannot find out. Morning starts with formal clothes and trouble. Lily wants the full dress suit ready for the silver jubilee dinner. Agnes discovers that its newspaper wrapping is old enough to make Theodore Roosevelt the joke, so the suit gets mocked before Montague even appears. The apartment feels like a stage set waiting for the wrong entrance. Public honor is coming; private panic is already in the room. Then the old father arrives. He treats Edwin like a bit player still living off the family name. Jarvis comes looking for the master, which ought to help Montague, but he asks for the father first and melts in front of the elder actor. Hamlet becomes the match. Father and son drop into scene work, then father shreds Edwin's dignity by saying the verse sounds like marbles in his mouth. Edwin snaps back with old charges: the shield in Macbeth, the trip during Hamlet's Ophelia news. Lily tries to keep order, but the fight has too much theatre in it. Jarvis watches, worshipful and useless. Montague claims greatness; Jarvis keeps his loyalty with the older legend, and the silver jubilee suddenly looks a little overdressed.

As heard by us

A vanity-fueled radio comedy that turns theatrical pomposity into the joke.

Edwin Montague spends the episode trying to keep a dark secret under wraps: the Shakespearean star is also Uncle Goodheart, the hero of an afternoon radio program, and the Procedium Club is ready to honor him with a silver jubilee dinner for 25 years in the theater.
