Luke asks if Lionel Wallace is telling the truth about the magical door or just hallucinating.
Luke opens with a short housekeeping note and points listeners toward LEP Premium for extra support, vocabulary, pronunciation, and ad-free listening. He then returns to story time and introduces H.G. Wells’s The Door in the Wall as another of his favorite short stories. He says he has adapted the story into more modern English so listeners can follow it without getting stuck in old-fashioned wording. Luke frames the episode as a listening lesson as much as a reading of a classic tale. Wallace’s childhood is shown as sad, lonely, and unhappy. As a boy, he finds a green door set in a white wall and steps into a garden where he meets friends and plays. That place becomes the central memory of his life. He keeps hoping to return to it, thinking about the garden before bed and hoping to dream about it so he can find his way back someday. Time passes and he has to move on with ordinary responsibilities. He studies hard as a schoolboy. He later becomes a successful politician and, Luke says, a member of the cabinet involved in important government work. Even with that success, the memory of the garden leaves him dissatisfied. People who know him describe him as distant and detached. A woman who loves him says he often seems lost in thought and far away. Luke also retells the school memory where Wallace mentions the door to other children. They do not believe him, accuse him of lying, and tease him. Wallace feels that if he had been alone, he might have been able to find the door again. Later, he occasionally sees the green door by chance, but he never goes in and never quite manages to reclaim the garden. Luke ends on a playful note, joking that he might disappear too if he ever wandered through a mysterious green door in a white wall.

As heard by us

A classic short story turned into calm, useful English practice with a melancholy edge.

Luke frames H.G. Wells's The Door in the Wall as a piece of English-learning retelling, and the remembered garden, Wallace's later success, and the unhappiness beneath that success give it a quiet emotional pull.
