Episode 163 | Four Important Things Parents Need to Know to Raise Kids - Part 2

·27 min·1 clip
James 4:7 and 1 Peter 5:8 both say to "resist" the devil, not ignore him.
Travis and Dawn welcome listeners back and thank them for being here. They also ask people to share the show and leave a review. Travis talks about a good week of travel and a stop at their favorite barbecue restaurant in Iowa. Dawn joins in on the memory of hanging out with friends on Saturday night. They celebrate their marriage group and the way it gives them room to stay connected, dig into God’s word, and pray for one another. The conversation then turns to a practical warning for parents. They treat giving a kid a phone like opening a gate that should not be opened casually. The concern is especially sharp around pornography and other harmful content. They say the problem starts younger than people want to admit, with eight-, nine-, and ten-year-olds carrying little computers in their hands. They also point out that a 14-year-old brain is still not fully developed. Another gate, they say, is letting kids spend the night with friends who do not know Jesus. The issue is not that kids can never be around those friends. The issue is handing over too much freedom and pretending it will all work out. They remember setting strict rules around where their own kids could spend the night, even when other parents got frustrated with those rules. Travis and Dawn say those limits mattered because parents only get one chance to protect their children. They point to older families who kept life balanced and Jesus at the center. Those kids grew into adults who fear God and are now raising their own children to love God. The close is a simple challenge to younger parents: find older couples, ask what they did, and learn from them.

As heard by us

A blunt warning about opening the wrong gates too early.

The episode stays centered on parenting boundaries, especially around phones and sleepovers, and it keeps returning to faith in Jesus without drifting off course. Travis and Dawn keep things practical.
