Beans start the mess here. Leo lives with his mother on a farm she bought on a whim, which was not exactly her finest plan. They are terrible farmers. They hate early mornings, grumble through chores, and somehow end up with cows that are really donkeys. Leo wants a shortcut. Magical beans feel like the sort of shortcut a kid would trust, especially when gold coins sound dull and work sounds worse. His mother is not buying it. She wants five gold coins for the beans they grew, because then they would at least have something useful. The sprout refuses to act magical. Leo pleads with it to head for the clouds, but it creeps along and looks more like roots than a proper beanstalk. Then Jack shows up with the least helpful news possible. His famous beanstalk shot up overnight, and this sad little plant is probably a dud. Leo takes that personally. Four gold coins start sounding pretty great, especially once his mother leaves to sell another family cow donkey. Leo grabs the ugly plant, expecting a weak sprout to pop free. Instead, a thick green stem slides up from underneath. The plant was growing down. That tiny backward twist turns a bad trade into a bigger problem, because every pull brings up more hidden stem. The bit keeps stretching, and the host plays Leo's mistake with just enough mock drama to make the bean rules fun without making them complicated. After the story, the host comes back to the room, asks whether listeners have ever regretted a trade, and gives shout-outs to kids listening around the world.
