WLHR PUBLIC RADIO | Fresh Scare with Sherry Disgusting| with guest JOSH RUBEN

·30 min·2 clips
The episode opens with a Bleacher Report app ad. Fresh Scare is presented as a WLHR broadcast from the Underworld, with Underworld Public Radio and Sharpknife in the sponsor stack. Sherri Disgusting arrives sounding like a professional announcer from the afterlife and welcomes Josh Rubin, whom she introduces as a writer, director, dreamweaver, visionary, and actor. Josh says he is terrified to be there. Sherri quickly defines “threat” with a Merriam-Webster-style setup and asks how he has used his skills to inflict evil. The first answer lands on branded content. Josh jokes that he inflicted terror when he sold his soul to do branded content, and Sherri reminds him that the internet is very old. The interview keeps that dry, in-world broadcast rhythm going with formal announcements and quick confirmations. Sherri asks whether horror or comedy is more frightening. Josh says comedy. He explains that comedy can be quite dark underneath the silliness. Sherri then asks which genre is harder to work in. Josh says scaring people is harder because he already knows comedy in his bones. He jokes that he has been killing it and laughing uproariously through the whole interview. Sherri says she cannot hear the laughter, but accepts the claim. A sponsor break interrupts the flow, then Fresh Scare returns and keeps the same cursed-radio tone. Sherri pivots to a filmmaker question and asks for Josh's top 100 favorites. He starts with Spielberg and then keeps going: Karin Kusama, Ben Stiller sometimes, Jim Swanberg, Lake Bell, Lee Whannell, Taika Waititi, John Singleton, Joseph Winter, Vanessa Winter, Duncan Burningham, Travis Stevens, Patrick Lawrence, and Natasha Karimani. The list feels like it could keep running forever. That running-list energy fits the show's larger joke, which is that podcast mechanics are just another thing the characters can overcommit to. Even the sponsor reads and formal sign-offs become part of the bit. The episode stays conversational, but every exchange is doing double duty as worldbuilding. It is a fake public-radio interview that knows how to sound professionally wrong in exactly the right way.
