Ruth declares to Naomi, 'Where you go I will go, and your God will be my God.'
The episode begins with Ruth chapter 1, set during a famine in the time of the judges. Elimelech takes his wife Naomi and two sons from Bethlehem to Moab, where he and his sons die, leaving Naomi widowed and childless. Naomi decides to return to Judah after hearing God has provided bread there. Her daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, initially want to accompany her, but Naomi urges them to stay. Orpah returns, but Ruth insists on staying with Naomi, making a famous vow of loyalty. They arrive in Bethlehem at the start of the barley harvest, where Naomi expresses her bitterness. Isaiah chapter 41 follows, where God speaks to Israel, assuring them not to fear because He is with them, will strengthen them, and help them. God contrasts Himself with idols, which are worthless, and promises to provide water and transform the desert. The reading concludes with 2 Corinthians chapter 1, where Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, writes to the church in Corinth and all saints in Achaia. He blesses God as the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in affliction so we can comfort others. Paul shares his experience of being overwhelmed in Asia, despairing of life, to show reliance on God who raises the dead. He emphasizes God's faithfulness, stating that in Christ, all God's promises are 'Yes,' and ends with a focus on faith and joy.
