sabbatical

·43 min·4 clips
John finds a frozen corpse gripping a car door handle for over 40 hours in a secluded ice storm.
John Ring wants the world to lose him. The year has worn him down until, by late October, stopping everything feels less like a choice than a need. He wants quiet, distance, and a place where nobody can easily reach him. The quiet does not hold. His private sabbatical turns into a hard rural winter, all bad roads, weather, and little details that refuse to sit right. Brambley Nestle becomes the way in. Near its end, somewhere by a convent and out of easy view from nearby properties, John finds a car where it should not be. The driver's window is down, which bothers him more than it should because the cold has made every ordinary mistake feel dangerous. He moves carefully, almost mechanically. He unhooks the dead driver's arm, lets it drop, pushes the body upright, and closes the door, as if doing things in order can keep panic away for a few more seconds. Then the lumpy shape beside the car comes into focus. It is not a dummy's head or some other misread object. It is a wild turkey, dead and frozen solid, lying on a map. More exactly, it is on a Rand McNally road map opened to the square of Pennsylvania John picked for his retreat. He knows to look closer. The turkey does not seem to have been shot, despite what he remembers about tracks in the first snowfall and Grandpa Billy hunting them. The glove compartment finishes the thought for him: only the Volvo's owner's manual and a bottle of blood thinners. Blitzer has found him. From 7,000 miles away, across the Atlantic, Blitzer has reached the one place John chose to be unreachable. John leaves without a theory. All he can do is keep the flashlight's images in his head while the road and the body fall behind him. Later, the story drifts toward numbers, emojis, glyphs, dots, and religious stories, not as decoration, but as surfaces that may all be hiding the same locked mechanism.
