How CT Scans Can Improve EV Safety: with Efrat Avnet Steinberg

·40 min·4 clips
Efrat Steinberg exposes how 5% of EV battery packs are sold with faulty torn wires that sensors can't detect.
The topic starts inside the battery. Bodhi frames Inner as a company trying to make hidden pack-level defects visible, using x-ray machines and artificial intelligence instead of leaning only on standard electrical checks. That is the hook. The pitch is not just catching a bad cell, but scanning the whole pack for cracks, leaks, swelling, and other trouble that simpler testing might never flag. Bodhi also notes why CEO interviews can get stiff when a guest walks in with one message and will not budge. Avnet Steinberg keeps the conversation grounded in warranty costs and recalls, where the pain is already real. The recall number sticks out: she says they track more than 100,000 battery recalls a year, which she calls crazy because these are new batteries. Repairability becomes the next stress test. The current process sounds manual, slow, unstandardized, and too tied to labor that cannot scale neatly. Then the idea moves into the car itself. Since there is not much in the car besides the battery, she argues the same scan could eventually happen while the pack is still installed. That would matter for used EV sales. Instead of poking around for engine clues, a buyer could check the battery and get a better read on how the car was treated. Second life is the farther-off piece. Avnet Steinberg says today’s second-life battery testing can look uneven and sometimes unprofessional. If dozens of millions of batteries are heading for reuse, testing has to get faster and more standardized.
