Bernadette grabs a knife from her car and stabs Kirsten five times after being called 'weird'.
The episode opens with a fable about teenage panic, framing the story of Bernadette Prody, a 15-year-old cheerleader in wealthy Orinda, California. Bernadette feels socially inferior despite being on the fringes of the popular crowd at Miramonte High School. She particularly envies Kirsten Costas, who embodies the ideal Orinda teen with wealth, athletic talent, and social status. After failing to make the cheerleading team and losing a yearbook staff position, Bernadette pins her hopes on joining the elite Bobbies club. Both girls are initiated into the Bobbies through a humiliating egg-and-mayo ritual. During summer break, Bernadette calls Kirsten's house pretending to be a Bobby officer, inviting her to a fake dinner. Bernadette plans to drive Kirsten to an upperclassman party to prove her worth. On June 23, 1984, Bernadette picks up Kirsten in her family's Ford Pinto. They stop at an abandoned church lot where Kirsten smokes a joint. Bernadette tries to persuade Kirsten to be her friend, but Kirsten calls her 'weird' and leaves the car. Kirsten gets a ride home from family friend Alex Arnold, with Bernadette following in the Pinto. When Kirsten arrives home and finds no one there, she heads to a neighbor's house. Bernadette, panicking about her reputation, grabs a knife from her car and chases Kirsten. She stabs Kirsten five times in the back and chest in the neighbor's yard. Kirsten dies at the hospital that night. The investigation initially focuses on another student, Nancy King, who had written violent thoughts about Kirsten. With few leads, police consult FBI profilers including John Douglas and Dr. Anne Burgess. They create a 14-page profile suggesting the killer is from a large Catholic family near Orinda and shows no remorse. Investigators re-interview friends and discover Bernadette's babysitting alibi was false. After being shown the profile during an interrogation, Bernadette leaves a suicide note confessing to the murder. Her mother finds the note and takes her to police, where she is arrested. Bernadette is convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to nine years in prison. The case was adapted into a 1994 TV movie 'Death of a Cheerleader' starring Tori Spelling. The episode concludes by reflecting on the universal teenage desire for acceptance that drove this tragedy.
