How to deal with resolution of financial matters when separating from a Narcissist

July 21, 2025·25 min·1 clip
April 2024 family procedure rules now require out-of-court dispute resolution to be considered in all circumstances.
Leaving is only the start. The host begins after separation, when the decision is made but the money is still tangled. Joint finances bring pressure fast. Marriage, shared property, business interests, and maintenance can all sit inside a process made harder by narcissistic control. Her advice is practical: do not assume that saying what you want will move things toward settlement. It may simply give the other party something to block. Communication needs planning. She suggests writing in a way that catches the spouse's attention by focusing on what they need, even if that feels awkward. Keep your real objectives guarded. A declared goal can become the exact thing a narcissistic spouse tries to deny. Disclosure is the main fight. She warns that a narcissistic spouse may lie, give their own version of the truth, avoid producing documents, and stop any clear view of the finances. Business ownership adds another problem. If the spouse runs a business, they may say it has no value and resist a proper valuation. Court structure may be needed. A court order can require bank statements and create the setting for company valuations, property valuations, and other financial information. The host puts this inside an early strategy meeting, where the listener can work out a realistic range of outcomes before deciding what to do. The goal is a controlled separation, even if that means weighing maintenance against the need to cut future financial ties and regain control after abuse.
