Viking Sleep Story: King Harald

·42 min·3 clips
King Harald vows not to cut his hair until he becomes king of all Norway, inspired by Gida's challenge.
The episode opens with brief sponsor messages before host Tayshia begins reading from Viking Tales by Jennie Hall, a retelling of Norse legend for a modern audience. The story centers on Harald, who at ten years old inherits the throne from his father King Hafton and immediately proves his generosity by hosting a lavish three-day funeral feast for his kingsmen. The feast is described in vivid detail: the great hall draped in black, three hundred men on benches, the Queen and her women serving mead in drinking horns, a skald performing a tribute song to the dead king. Harald rewards the skald with a golden bracelet and sends every guest away with rich gifts. When Harald's enemies hear that a boy has taken the throne, they mass their forces for war. Harald laughs, sends war arrows across the country, and leads a fully assembled mounted army into battle within weeks, defeating King Haki and honoring his fallen warriors with a burial mound. The story then shifts to Harald's courtship of Gida, a beautiful and learned noblewoman who refuses his marriage proposal, sending back a message that she will not wed a petty king and daring him to unite all of Norway first. Far from angering Harald, Gida's challenge inspires him to make a public vow to leave his hair uncut until he is king of all Norway, earning him the nickname Harald Shockhead. He then embarks on ten years of unbroken warfare, winning every battle, absorbing each defeated king's territory, and installing earls to govern with justice and collect taxes. His political model brings peace and prosperity to farmers who had long suffered from constant raiding and petty warfare. Chiefs who prefer the old Viking raiding ways resist him, led by Sulfi, the son of a king Harald killed. After defeating the last coalition of sea-kings in a dramatic naval battle, Harald fulfills his vow. An earl cuts and combs his golden hair, giving him a new name: Harald Fairhair. He then sends the same marriage message back to Gida, who accepts, and a rich wedding ceremony unites them with traditional Norse ritual.

As heard by us

A measured Norse legend that turns battle into a slow, settling bedtime current.

The episode tracks King Harald through the muster of an army, a battlefield challenge, and a clash staged with broad, ceremonial force. It then settles into Gida's marriage and the old sense of reward, conquest, and fate falling into place.
