Scary Fire Lookout Stories

April 10, 2026·1 hr 3 min·5 clips
Something climbs the stairs, whispers 'I can see your light' through the hatch, then pounds on it while demanding entry.
The setup is almost procedural. After a divorce, the narrator takes a 2022 fire lookout job and swaps an apartment in Missoula for Flathead National Forest. Sheepherder Peak is remote, and the tower is plain enough to feel believable: about 7,000 feet up, a 55-foot steel frame, a 14x14 cab, radio gear, a propane stove, solar charging, and a toilet shed below. Nothing opens like a monster story. Dale Vigil drives him up on June 5th and spends two hours covering fire reporting, weather observations, emergency contacts, and the rules that make the job feel manageable. Then Dale gives him the warning. The forest will make noise at night, he says. Most of it will be elk, coyotes, bears, branches, or something else with a boring explanation. The hundredth sound is the one to worry about. Asked about that final one percent, Dale just says to radio if it happens and heads back down the road. For a while, routine holds. The narrator gets up at 0530, files weather at 0600, makes coffee on the propane stove, and settles into the solitude he thought he wanted. He thinks he can handle it. Campfire stories from Flagstaff taught him that every forest in Arizona had its own legends, and he decides animal sounds after dark will not get to him. That confidence lasts about nine weeks. Then the first voice in the dark tears the normal world open, and panic leaves him stuck on one thought about dying. By the end, the usual explanations do not work. The narrator rejects bears, elk, sleep deprivation, and carbon monoxide because the thing left tracks in dirt and gouges in steel. The Pulaski by the door becomes the part that lingers: the stain still there two years later, and the memory of something screaming after the axe hit.

As heard by us

A lonely tower story that lets ordinary details do the frightening work.

Scary Fire Lookout Stories follows a remote posting in Flathead National Forest as it turns routine into unease. The strongest stretch is the one that stays with the practical details: the 14x14 cab, weather checks, the distance to the nearest road, the supervisor's warning…
