InvestED: The Rule #1 Investing Podcast · Phil Town & Danielle Town

Ten Billion

Buffett is back at the center. Phil and Danielle return to the Buffett meeting they missed in person after admitting their Ulta focus shoved it aside. Missing it still seems to sting. The online replay helps, though, especially compared with the old days when being in the room was the whole deal. The conversation wanders in a good way. Danielle explains who the Rule One students are, and Phil talks about why those students wanted to gather and meet each other. Then Buffett's small money answer takes over. Phil hears a pretty strong hint that Buffett still thinks a million can be put to work for unusually strong returns. Danielle slows him down on the wording. That little pushback is the useful part, because the lesson depends on the gap between what Buffett said and what Phil believes he meant. The image is old school research: Buffett digging through pages to find good investments, especially when local options were thin. Phil compares that with his own beginning. He says private deals came through networks tied to the Transcendental Meditation community while he was a river guide. That was not a normal path. In Omaha in 1955, he says, the work would have meant a more deliberate hunt through whatever pages could reveal good stuff. The takeaway is simple, and a little annoying in the best way. A disciplined small investor can still do the reading. There is no magic shortcut. The question is whether today's investor has the patience for the dull work Buffett treated as basic.
