InvestED: The Rule #1 Investing Podcast · Phil Town & Danielle Town

Expert Help

·37 min·3 clips
Phil Town and Danielle Town open with the easy, familiar banter of a long-running father-daughter show. They note that this is the eighth year of the podcast and settle into a conversation about investing and business analysis. Phil says that kind of work takes a lot of time, which is why he has people helping him cover more companies so the search for something really good gets wider. Warren Buffett's meeting becomes the anchor. Phil says Buffett would start with a million dollars and, if he wanted to make 50 percent a year, would go to the littlest companies, meaning micro caps below $300 million. The point is less about theory than about the practical search for businesses worth owning. Then the conversation shifts. Danielle says she is going to explore SCORE, the Small Business Administration group dedicated to helping people with small businesses, and that it offers business mentoring at no cost. Phil adds that there are about 250 SCORE offices around the United States and that people can visit as many times as they want and work with more than one mentor without charge. He notes that the vetting may be minimal at first because the mentors are volunteers, while Danielle likes that she can ask for another SCORE mentor if one is not a fit. The show also notes that the program has improved since they first tapped into it 40 years ago. Danielle says she wants to find a mentor for the envelope business, and Phil wants listeners to hear how hard or easy it is to get access to someone who really understands that business. The segment stays close to the ground, with the two of them working through what real help looks like in practice. It ends with the usual reminder that the discussion is their opinion and not investing advice.
