Pick of the Week #994 – Redcoat #14

September 14, 2025·1 hr 21 min·5 clips
Ryan Haupt explains why Redcoat #14's George Washington as a thunder god made it his Pick of the Week.
The show opens by heckling itself. Episode 994 turns into a small fight about how long iFanboy has been around, why the Pick of the Week explanation still has to happen, and whether Josh can bear one more round of anniversary math. That is the rhythm here. The setup is simple: new comics, one favorite, plenty of side chatter. But the episode keeps showing how much ritual has collected around that simple weekly routine. Redcoat #14 carries the title, though the excerpt does not lay out the whole Redcoat case. The stronger read is the stuff around it: quick panel talk, old habits, corrections mid-thought, and three readers who know exactly how each other tends to argue. The Transformers section gets the most animated. Daniel Warren Johnson's run gets framed through wrestling-match energy, huge fights, and art that can still thrill when the plot gets a little hard to track. Jorge Corona's work gets real affection too. The panel expects to miss that visual charge, while admitting a different artist might make some scenes easier to follow. They are not dressing confusion up as depth. The praise works because they can talk about image clarity, emotional motion, and plot legibility without turning the review into homework. Then Danny Rand turns up undead. The title sounds like an easy pass, and the fun is hearing the host walk that back once the book turns out to be more than a simple zombie hook. A four-issue mini from Jason Lou and Fran Galan becomes a plainspoken case for making another Iron Fist book with Danny Rand, which is the sort of reader wish this show says without sanding it down. The ad break sits in the middle, but it does not really knock the tape off course. The comic-shop looseness survives the machinery. By the end, the mole gag has swallowed the outro. They mute Ryan, jump paragraphs, send listeners toward YouTube, video archives, and Patreon, and keep letting the bit wreck the closer. It ends loose because that is the point. The draw is three familiar readers turning a weekly stack into argument, memory, craft talk, and dumb timing that still finds its way back to the books.

As heard by us

A lively weekly stack conversation that turns corrections, banter, and a little confusion into the charm.

iFanboy starts with anniversary banter and then settles into the weekly stack, and the episode lands best when the hosts are moving fast with corrections, ribs, and second guesses in real time.
