I'll Drink To That

My Tentative Whole-Assed Celebration/ American Idiot Review

·46 min·4 clips
Matty celebrates six months at his longest-held job since 2013, but fears losing it despite his pride.
April 18th, 2017 is the marker. Matty opens with who she is, how Seattle turned into Los Angeles, and the production job she has now kept for six months. She knows that may sound small from the outside. For her, with every qualifier attached, it is the longest steady job stretch since fall 2013. The celebration comes out sideways: mic trouble, soda ice, corrections, and that reflex of explaining why a good thing is hard to trust. Tentative is the right word. The first half keeps circling progress as if progress might bolt if she looks at it too directly, especially with drinking still tangled up in how she understands the rest of her life. Even so, she lets the win count. That gives the episode its turn into American Idiot, with the Broadway cast recording already setting the mood. Green Day is not just dropped in as trivia. Matty talks through Dookie, radio familiarity, her husband's CDs, senior high school in 1999, Nimrod, and Time of Your Life as pieces of actual memory. Then the North Hollywood show with Joe takes over. Her recommendation has a little clock ticking under it, because she is hoping people can still catch it. The surprise is that the musical works. She went in expecting nonsense, or at least something flimsy, and found an adaptation that gave the songs a shape. The review keeps brushing up against context: the 2004 album, the about-2009 musical, and the anger of that earlier era. She does not turn it into a lecture. It almost gets too heavy anyway, so she pulls it back to the recommendation, closes with 21 Guns from the Broadway show, and leaves the celebration sounding like something she had to coax into the room.

As heard by us

A six-month work milestone opens into a candid reckoning with drinking and American Idiot's unexpected stage power.

Matty's six-month mark at his production job should be an easy win, but the episode keeps circling the harder work of letting a good thing register while drinking still complicates the picture.
