Ep 41: Magical Things: The Sorting Hat

November 26, 2025·51 min·5 clips
Mitchell uses ChatGPT to generate a 'Sorting Hat song for 2025 with modern slang,' creating a potentially viral, humorous moment.
Filming chatter comes first. The panel assumes work has started at Leaveson Studios, then kicks around whether colder weather is keeping the production away from location shoots. Arabelle Stanton comes up next. Her audio-edition premiere comments sound sweet and excited, but also locked down enough that the hosts laugh at how little anyone can take from them. Then hats become the business at hand. The Sorting Hat is less a prop here than a weird little canon machine: it splits children into houses while also warning everyone to stick together. That contradiction bugs the panel, and it gives them plenty to chew on. House rivalry, Quidditch, school identity, danger turned into branding. Somehow the hat sits right in the middle of all of it. The songs get real attention. The 1994 lyrics land well because they tie the houses to place, character, rhyme, and Voldemort-era stakes without sounding tossed off. Later attempts do not fare as well. A 2008 version gets waved away fast as derivative, while the Cursed Child material feels short, useful, and not especially loved. Then ChatGPT gets pulled into the room. Mitchell asks it for a 2025 Sorting Hat song with modern slang, admits he has not pre-screened the result, and the whole thing suddenly has TikTok energy. The awkwardness is the joke. Jamie, Steven, and Hannah are stuck in the moment with him as Mitchell realizes he may have to rap a synthetic Sorting Hat song. The canon keeps expanding from there. They drift into other sorting systems, possible teams or squadrons, and even dragons deciding where someone belongs. Under the silliness, the adaptation question stays sharp: can the HBO version make sentient headwear feel important without blocking the actors' faces? They end loose, realize they skipped other hat types, defend hats in Potter anyway, and close in full fan-panel chaos.

As heard by us

A loose, funny Sorting Hat hangout that mixes lore, PR chatter, and fan debate.

Mitchell, Jamie, and Steven open with the Harry Potter TV show moving to HBO, then spend most of the episode on the Sorting Hat, treating it like a sentient bit of headwear with real lore weight and room for jokes.
