How to Monetise Your Podcast Before You Even Launch

·15 min
James Burt and Alex Chisell open by challenging the idea that monetisation has to wait until a podcast has numbers. Their answer is simple: it does not. Their first route is sponsorship and brand deals before launch. The second is subscribers with early access. They also point to membership-style offers as another way to start bringing in money before the audience is large. The hosts do not pretend sponsors work in a vacuum. They keep coming back to the data most brands still want, including listener counts, reach, impressions, and social media handles. Even so, they argue that plenty of the groundwork can be done well before the first episode appears. Artwork matters. So does the show setup. Naming matters too. They also bring in the ideal listener profile, guest selection, and the way interviews are run. The launch process is treated as something you design, not something you improvise. They mention a 14-day launch approach as part of that system. The tone stays brisk and practical throughout. They sound like people who have done the work and have little patience for vague plans. At one point they say they have launched more than 400 podcasts. They also claim to have worked on some of the most successful podcast launches in Europe. The episode then digs into platform economics. Apple is singled out because of its 30 percent cut on in-app revenue. They explain why that pushes some creators and platforms to send buyers to external checkout pages instead. That opens into a broader warning about where subscription money actually goes once the platform takes its share. The legal fights around those fees are mentioned as background noise. Near the end, the conversation turns into a direct pointer toward their own course. They say it packages the system into cheat sheets, blueprints, downloads, guides, and on-demand videos. The through-line is straightforward. If a show is going to make money, the structure for that money should exist before launch, not after the audience has already been told to care.
