Selfless

December 17, 2025·26 min·2 clips
Mendez reveals that pathologist Roger Benhoff faked his death to escape Springfield Corp and offered to help others escape too.
The episode opens mid-scene with John in handcuffs as Squires holds a gun on the group. Janie argues that Dr. Lewis would have already ordered them shot if she intended to kill them, and tries to reason with Squires. Dr. Lewis arrives and explains they are being kept to observe how the coming storm affects John specifically, since his supernatural gift may return. A man named Crazy Dan arrives and injects John with a mild paralytic, then performs a brain biopsy, extracting a sample from John's nasal passage while John is fully awake. John wakes hours later with Stuart watching over him. Janie reveals that while Crazy Dan knocked his bag over during the biopsy, Mendez grabbed a scalpel and has spent five hours quietly cutting through cell bars. He has cut through two bars and nearly created a gap large enough to pass through. An invisible character named Huck, who can make himself and anything touching him invisible, exits and overpowers Squires. Huck opens the other cells but insists John must stay, as Squires still has the gun. John tells Huck to let him stay and the group leaves. Alone with Mendez, John tries to convince him that ghosts are real and that Alex communicated through them. Mendez dismisses this until John cites specific private details that only Alex would know. John reveals Alex injected himself with the serum, believed in quantum immortality, and was not afraid to die. He also tells Mendez that Alex may have discovered Dr. Lewis was responsible for his death and that she killed him to keep it quiet. Mendez, now bleeding from the escape effort, reveals that the facility uses a device called the crochet to draw storms and run tests on exposed individuals. He tells John that Alex showed him where it is and that he plans to destroy it himself rather than flee. John leaves with Mendez's directions to Roger Benoff's cell for extraction from the Springfield Corp system. The episode ends on Mendez's quiet farewell.

As heard by us

A locked-room horror case that turns science, guilt, and violence into the same argument.

Locked in a room with a gun and a murder accusation, this episode plays like a moral pressure chamber. The arguments stay clipped and ugly in a way that feels right, and the horror lands hardest when it is handled like procedure instead of spectacle.
