Hotel Daydream · Conundrums and Esoterica

02 - Stone Walled

April 30, 2025·35 min·3 clips
Jerry the lead obelisk returns to the hotel in the middle of a supercell storm to beg for shelter as the winds begin toppling the escarpment, and Lionel lets them in through the loading bay.
Mr. Schlafly begins inconveniently elsewhere. The host's good morning note says the eight dimensional rescue is still pending, though the book on higher dimensions has made four dimensions seem almost manageable. For company, Mendel, the resident Diacosa Pentacontahexa Zenton, is assigned to sit with him while updates arrive with the calm of a maintenance call. Monday starts softly. The weekly report to Madame Rouge drifts through Miss Gaff's old rooms, watering globes, the statue garden, and lilacs in crisp spring air. Work is still waiting under all those flowers. Tea invitations and the mention of a nephew in Dennis Emrys in Wales make the page feel polite but crowded, as if everything needs answering at once. Then lunch turns ridiculous, and worse, recognizable. A young woman takes the narrator's usual booth. The narrator knows the reaction is irrational. That does not stop the whole room from shifting around it. The bellhops, Gertrude, the cleaning witches, Sophia, Gerard, Nottavalli, and Mrs. Dwyer become silent witnesses to a private rule nobody ever wrote down. Abadabun tries to talk. Her story about an aunt and creature resources cannot survive the narrator's flustered anger, aimed at someone who has done nothing wrong. The lobby offers a place to pace, breathe, and brush off a concerned bellhop. By the time the narrator returns, calmer, the booth is empty and the conversation has gone with it. Abadabun leaves with her meal in a to-go box because Baptiste is waiting. What remains is lunch, embarrassment, and the neat outline of a habit. Wednesday comes in rough handwriting. On the Emerald Marshes, wind has spoiled the page while Master Daoji and the narrator answer shepherd Roche Finlawindle's complaint about shouting that scared his flock.
