159: The Beef and the Bear — are you incorporating luxury hospitality practices into your design business?

·1 hr 8 min·4 clips
Most designers have not experienced true luxury and true hospitality.
The mood starts loose. The hosts spend the opening in that weird holiday stretch where Thanksgiving can feel skipped, annoying, or heavier than everyone admits. Very on-brand. The Wicked joke gives tired listeners a little permission to opt out of the big family production if they are stretched thin or just not feeling it. Then the conversation gets sharper. The main business story is a designer dealing with a client payment problem, and the hosts slow down over the messy parts: fraud claims, bank coverage, write offs, and what the loss is really worth once stress enters the room. Nobody treats it like a neat lesson. They talk about documenting what happened, feeling slighted, and the temptation to go hard when a client has already crossed a line. But the harder question is leverage. If the client starts posting in groups, leaving reviews, or pulling the designer into a public back-and-forth, being technically right may get expensive fast. That part has teeth. The hosts keep asking whether the designer is fully solid before pushing back, especially if missed deadlines or fuzzy communication could come up once the fight gets public. It does not feel like blame. It feels like two peers saying, take a breath before you clap back, because there may be more sitting in the room than the invoice. They also point out that most projects do not turn into this kind of drama. That is why the bad ones stick. Still, it happens often enough that the advice matters: document the mess, weigh the money against the emotional cost, and be careful before inviting a reputation fight. The end snaps back to silly. They riff on a fake designer-news show, episode titles, days of the week, and then land in their usual listener signoff.
