Donnie Darko (2001) - "Pro homies helping homies" (ft. The Substance Podcast)

·1 hr 23 min·5 clips
The hosts call Donnie Darko a “really wonderful” bridge between pre- and post-9/11 horror.
The episode opens with the Hannas introducing Philip of The Substance Podcast. He talks about his show as a search for goodness, truth, and beauty, and says he brings on a wide range of film-minded guests. That gives the conversation an easy, informal start. The hosts then move into Donnie Darko, a movie built on time travel and unanswered questions. Donnie keeps seeing Frank, a rabbit-faced figure with a hollowed-out, bleeding eye. He is told to follow a path that leads him to The Philosophy of Time Travel and to Roberta Sparrow, the woman the teenagers call Grandma Death. From there, the story keeps tightening. Donnie sleepwalks, floods his high school by breaking a water main, and starts dating Gretchen after she moves into town with her mother. The conversation also follows the school pressure around Kitty Farmer and Jim Cunningham, whose attitude lessons become a point of rebellion for Donnie. A school assembly makes that conflict louder. Donnie insults Cunningham in public, which only sharpens the adults' frustration and the movie's sense of small-town control. The plot then turns darker. Frank pushes Donnie to burn down Cunningham's house, and firefighters later uncover child pornography at the site. The fallout keeps spreading. Rose gets pulled into the dance-troupe trip, Elizabeth throws a Halloween party, and Gretchen shows up upset because her mother has gone missing. When Donnie realizes Frank's prophesized end of the world is only hours away, he takes Gretchen and two friends toward Sparrow's house instead of leaving things alone. That choice collapses into violence. Seth and Ricky are trying to rob Sparrow, the group fights in the road, and an oncoming car runs over Gretchen. The driver is Frank in costume, and Donnie answers by shooting him in the eye before walking home with Gretchen's body. The episode closes on the vortex over Donnie's house and the grief, shock, and complicity hanging over the town.
