How To Homeschool During Crisis Times: Terri Hitt

·27 min·1 clip
Terri recounts a flood, an estate-sale call, and a moment on the closet floor saying, “God, I cannot do this.”
Shansi Amaniyi frames the conversation around homeschooling during times of crisis, naming health issues, financial challenges, unexpected emergencies, and more. Terri Hitt thanks her for the invitation and says she loves pouring back into mothers. She describes herself as a longtime homeschool mom and podcaster. Her story spans two sets of children over two generations. The first were not homeschooled because she worked full-time outside the home, and her oldest daughter always wanted to be a homeschool mom. When the second set came along, Terri says God called her to homeschool. Her middle daughter was homeschooled all the way through, and the youngest came home at age nine. Terri reaches for the song God on a Mountain to describe the steadiness she wants parents to hold onto. The God in the valley is still the God on the mountain, she says, and that idea shapes how she thinks about hard seasons. She recommends entering the school year with open hands and an open heart. Day by day, she says, rest in God. One practice matters more than the others: start with Bible study first thing, even when the easier instinct is to begin with the hardest subject. She says that when children see that habit, it teaches them to put God first as a lived pattern, not just a private one. That habit helps shape character and behavior for the rest of the day, and sometimes for the rest of the month or year. When crisis moments come, the family already has a firm foundation to stand on together. She also names the pressure many new homeschool moms feel when they compare their own progress with another family's, even something as simple as cursive. Her answer is to teach identity in Christ, and she points listeners toward a free resource and module on how identity could be sabotaging their children.
