How To Explain Your Homeschool Lifestyle When Visiting Family, Friends: Christy Faith

·33 min·2 clips
Christy Faith says a “why statement” should be memorized by parents and kids.
Shansi Amaniyi opens the conversation by introducing Christy Faith as the guest on Homeschool Hints. The topic is how to explain the homeschool life to family and friends, especially when holiday relationships get tense. Christy begins with some of her own background. Before TikTok, she says she worked for years as an educational expert and ran a tutoring center, an educational center, and a consulting firm in Los Angeles. Their clients included wealthy families, A-listers, and billionaires. She also spent years supporting public and private school systems. Many of the children who came to the center after school had diagnoses or other needs. She says she read thousands of IEPs and sat in parent-teacher meetings all day long. That experience shapes how she talks about homeschooling now. She tells parents not to open Thanksgiving with a classroom-style defense. Instead, she encourages them to speak to the heart in a way that lowers the temperature. Her tone stays warm and practical throughout. She suggests that parents can explain the freedom homeschooling gives their family. She also says it helps to think through responses before the gathering begins. If a relative says something rude, she recommends having a simple answer ready. One example is telling a curious adult to speak with the parent instead of questioning the child directly. She says that kind of interrogation happens in doctors' offices and at family events more often than it should, and calls it undermining, manipulative, and toxic. She pushes back on the idea that homeschooling children are required to explain or justify themselves. Children, she says, should not be put on trial just because they are homeschooled. At the same time, she does not say every family must homeschool. Her view is that homeschooling can be a strong choice for a loving home, motivated mom, motivated dad, and a true team effort. She closes by reminding listeners that many objections reveal more about the other person than about the homeschool family. A calmer, kinder response usually helps everyone more.

Christy Faith's conversation treats holiday awkwardness as a real homeschooling problem, not a theoretical one. The strongest part is how it shifts from encouragement to usable advice: what to say when relatives get nosy, how to keep adults from putting children on the spot, and…
