Hit Record Episode 74: Them Crooked Vultures

·1 hr 38 min·7 clips
Ah, I see what you did there
Sam and Ginty are back after a six-week gap and joke straight away about how long it has been since they last recorded. They also toss in a bit about not checking whether any hate mail has turned up. The proper focus is Them Crooked Vultures, with Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and John Paul Jones all getting named, though in the hosts' usual half-polished way. Before they get there, the chat drifts into film plans. One of them tried to catch a screening at the weekend and missed it. They talk through the hassle of trying to find it in cinemas, then settling for Prime if they have to, though a Blu-ray would still be better if it exists. That turns into a birthday-gift joke, because of course it does. TV takes over next. One of them has finally finished The Handmaid's Tale, and the other wants to know whether there is any hope in the ending. The answer is basically no. They talk about how the first season lines up with the book, then note that the show goes well beyond that and just keeps going. They binge-watched it, which they agree is a terrible idea, because it is miserable television to sit through in big chunks. The whole thing only gets bleaker from there. Even with all the digressions, the tone stays warm and familiar, like people in a room rather than a scripted review. They finish by lining up Wet Leg for the next record, then Panda Bear's Sinister Grift after that, if they remember to actually listen to it. It ends as a half-review, half-catch-up that keeps wandering, but stays funny enough to stick with.

As heard by us

A loose, funny album chat that takes its time getting to Them Crooked Vultures.

Hit Record opens like a mate's catch-up that has gone on a bit too long. The hosts note the six-week gap, drift through film plans and TV, and lean into a bit of self-mockery before the album talk really lands. That looser start gives the episode an easy shape.
