History in Reverse Sci. Fi. Podcast - Ep. 26 - "The Wild Robot"

·54 min·3 clips
The factory ship arrives, Vontra demands Roz's memory, and the forest turns into a battle zone.
The conversation starts plainly. Carola and Richie introduce The Wild Robot as a DreamWorks 2024 movie, mention that they have been away for a while, and slide back into the father-daughter rhythm without making a thing of it. The movie instantly reminds them of an earlier novella they covered, plus another story with wild robots, and Richie starts poking at whether the whole trend sits somewhere near steampunk. Then Roz takes over the recap. Carola follows the bond between Roz and Brightville as it moves from caretaking into something close to parenthood. That is where the sweetness hits. Flight lessons, swimming lessons, and Brightville finding out Roz killed his parents become the emotional middle of their read. They joke, but they do not joke past the hurt. The not-your-real-mom blowup plays like a familiar family-movie move, and they notice how the flight sequence patches things up without needing much talk. Long Neck gets a dad joke, naturally. The old goose taking Brightville under his wing gives them exactly the kind of obvious wordplay the show is happy to keep. For a minute, migration looks like the ending. Richie says he expected Brightville to leave with the geese, Roz to return home, and the lesson to stay simple: be kind, be helpful, know your place. Nope. The third act shows up, the geese head south, and the movie opens into more adventure while revealing that the setting is Earth. Their patience is not endless. By the end, one of them likes the movie a lot and still wonders why all the extra robot business had to be there. That is the fun of the episode. They can admire Roz, enjoy the sweetness, question the machinery, and still send people off to watch the film.

As heard by us

A warm, sideways conversation about robots, migration, and the film's sweet emotional center.

History in Reverse starts with The Wild Robot and lets that choice open into a loose father-daughter discussion about science fiction, robot history, and the film's island setting.
